There were five free gifts issued with various Dandys in 1938, one being the bow and arrows, the other four being toffees! Prior to that, issues 1 and 2 offered the ‘express whistler’ and ‘jumping frog’ of which no known examples exist. You can guess what happened to the toffee.

Dudley Watkins shows his masterly ability from realism to caricature in these panels along with his pencilled notes on how Nosey and Dosey should be depicted and editorial suggestions on possible drawing changes (ignored!).
In this Beano issue alone Watkins drew ‘Wavy Davy and his Navy’, a full page ‘Lord Snooty’, a double page ‘Shipwrecked Circus’, and this magnificent ‘Tom Thumb’ double page. Practically half the comic drawn single-handedly by an artist at the height of his powers.

Desperate Dan was allegedly based on the first Dandy editor, Albert Barnes, who had a large jutting chin; he and Watkins often conferred on how Dan should be developed and drawn. In these panels our Cactusville Cowpoke goes shopping for sausages for Aunt Maggie, Danny and Katey with disastrous results!
