White Slaves of New Orleans cover artwork (1949) painted and signed by Reginald Heade, with the corresponding Archer Press paperback. 22" x 17" Framed and glazed.
Winning Bid: £1573

Reginald Heade (1903-1957) was the finest pulp fiction cover artist of his day. His paintings of ‘femmes fatales’ and hard-boiled gun molls in the late 1940s-1950s are acclaimed both in the U.K. and America.
In his heyday he produced many cover paintings for Archer Press and latterly Gaywood Press, who distributed the hugely successful Hank Janson paperbacks.
‘White Slaves of New Orleans’ shows Heade’s artistry to perfection; the subtle use of light and shade in the main figure, who is almost supplicant to the menace of the indeterminate background shadow. Heade was often paid extra for lettering the finished painting and this he duly did.

194

Heade illustrated paperbacks (1940s-1950s) Archer, Gaywood Press. Coffin For A Cutie, Give It To Me Straight, The Brute by Spike Morelli and Paul Renin, with Amok and Torment by Hank Janson. All Heade cover art. [fn+/vfn] (5)
