Tom Thumb 6 page artwork (1947) by Dudley Watkins
for The Magic-Beano Book 1948 (pages 99-104). The King takes his pipe by the fire so Tom and Tinkel decide to make a new ‘king size’ one for His Majesty. They test it out with a smoke and the ‘Little Princess’ has to administer Castor Oil (Extra Nasty)! Another series of Watkin’s artwork at his brilliant best.
To our knowledge the first Tom Thumb artworks to be offered at auction. Indian ink & blue crayon on card. 13 x 9 ins each (6 pages)

for the Dandy No 170 March 1st 1941
It’s hot and Dan’s thirsty so he uses a telegraph pole and an anvil to get some snow from a mountain top to make an ice-lolly. It freezes him up and he awakens a dormant volcano to thaw himself out but all the water he used has ruined the barley crop – until he drinks 100 gallons of lemon barley water and his beard starts sprouting barley – phew!

Terry Wakefield will be eternally remembered for his Laurel and Hardy strips for Film Fun, taking the strip over from his father, George in the 1940s. When work dried up in the early 60s he became a London ambulance driver doing the occasional illustration for friends like the one above.
