Charley’s War original artwork by
Joe Colquhoun from Battle Action No. 293 (Oct 23 1980). "Blue inches
his way along the overhead pipe to take out the Boche machine guns…". Writer
Pat Mills, letterer Mike Peters.
Rare. Indian ink on cartridge paper. 14 x 19 ins.
Winning Bid incl. 10% Buyers Premium:
£363
Based on an anthology of soldiers’ letters written in the trenches during WW1,
‘Charley’s War’ was conceived by Pat Mills and based on fact. ‘Battle’ editor
Dave Hunt persuaded artist Joe Colquhoun to come off his immensely popular air
story, ‘Johnny Red’, where his natural gift for characterisation and realism had
amassed an army of fans. Mills then gave Charley’s character some perspective
by introducing the adventures of his friend, Blue, a French soldier at Verdun
whose daring exploits are illustrated in the original artwork above. Joe Colquhoun
has worked for IPC for over thirty years. He drew Paddy Payne for the cover of
‘Lion’ and Football Family Robinson for ‘Jag’. Then in the 1970’s he worked on
humorous strips for ‘Buster’ and ‘Cor!!’. He began Johnny Red for ‘Battle’ in
1976 before arguably his best work on ‘Charley’s War’ in 1978.
