Original Jonah artwork drawn and coloured by Ken Reid for The
Beano 964 back cover, 7 January 1961. This vintage colour page shows our nautical
nemesis marooned in the sewers of Clotville-on-Clyde with typically disastrous
results. Indian ink and poster paint on cartridge paper. Framed and glazed.
25 x 21 ins. With The Beano 817, first Jonah strip (2)
Winning Bid: £605
Ken Reid (1919-1987) was introduced to D.C. Thomson by his artist brother-in-law,
Bill Holdroyd. His first strip was Roger the Dodger for The Beano in 1953, followed
by Grandpa and then for The Dandy he drew Angel Face and Bing-Bang Benny. However,
it was with Jonah on March 15 1958 that he illustrated one of the truly great
gormless characters of comics. Forever adrift in a sea of maritime madness, Jonah
was Ken Reids personal favourite and probably his finest work and this "Veteran
Of Trafalgar" rightly claimed The Beano back cover for over five years.

Dennis The Menace No 1 of 50 Charity Limited Edition Print (2001) with
original margin sketches of Dennis and Gnasher signed by David Sutherland and
David Parkes, counter-signed by Beano editor Euan Kerr. The print illustrates
the untold story of how Dennis acquired his legendary striped jumper!
Longtime Beano artist David Sutherland took over the Dennis strip from David
Law in 1971, finally relinquishing the Menace to David Parkins in
1998 who immediately introduced us to Dennis baby sister Bea (pun very much
intended). David Parkins has drawn this strip as a homage to David Law in his
style and the original signed margin sketches are on this numbered first edition
only.
We are pleased to offer this unique piece on behalf of D.C. Thomson & Co
Limited for the benefit of Comic Relief (Charity No. 326568) and Compal will donate
the buyers and sellers premium to the charity.
