Ally Sloper was the creation of the humorous writer Charles Ross. With his companion Ikey Mo, Sloper was perennially planning devious get rich schemes, which always failed. They starred in Ross’s comic paper "Judy". Around 1870 he sold his papers to the partnership known as the Brothers Dalziel, eight in number, who were proprietors of mostly comic papers. In 1884 Gilbert Dalziel, a son of one of the partners, founded the immensely popular paper "Ally Sloper’s Half-Holiday".
